Slow Art / Slow Media

Together with Kevin Hamilton (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign), I started researching phenomena of slow art / slow media. We are still inmidst of collecting various projects and artworks dealing with slowness as a conscious element of art and media production, countering the acceleration of the globalised system of art by fostering meditative, enduring, local or sustainable practices.

Though we do not exclude the aspect of slowness as a mode of contemplating art (often related to the term ‘slow art’), our main focus is on slowness inherent in artistic projects and works, that is works that explictely demand ‘slow reception’, works that have been produced ‘slowly’, ‘remotely’ etc., are related to questions of endurance, the local, questions of sustainability etc.

We gave a class on the topic in the context of the ProArt International Summerschool 2012 and started a tumblr to facilitate the research.
